Do more of the wrong thing, more efficiently

I heard this quote on a podcast recently, and it was of course a great reminder of what happens when you put tactics before strategy, and then try to optimise.

If you don’t clearly understand why it’s the right thing to do and how it will help you achieve your goals, then improving your productivity or optimising your workflow won’t help.

  1. Figure out what you’re trying to achieve
  2. Determine the best path to get there
  3. Then, and only then, start implementing.

The podcast in Question was Amantha Imber’s “How I Work” – specifically this episode with Nigel Marsh.
